A Pokémon card worth $60,000 has ‘gotten lost’ in the mail
Last August, a buyer on eBay dropped an entire $60,000 on an extremely rare Pokémon card. It’s now July 2019, and the card has apparently vanished off the face of the earth.
YouTuber smpratte, a trading card connoisseur, posted a video on Tuesday that detailed the situation.
In the video, smpratte says that they know both the buyer and seller and can vouch that both parties ‘did everything they could’ to ensure that the transaction went as smoothly and legitimately as possible.
They also explain that the seller sold the card to someone based outside of the US. They insured it for $50,000 and then proceeded to send it via domestic mail.
The card made it all the way to a Global Shipping Program centre in New York City before mysteriously disappearing.
Given that the package was insured for such a high price, smpratte posits the theory that someone opted to steal it.
While there’s no proof of this, the only other likely theory is that the postal service somehow managed to lose an extremely high value package, and haven’t been able to find it in almost a year.
The silver lining of this situation is that if the card has indeed been stolen, its incredible rarity means that it’ll be virtually impossible to resell without attracting some serious attention.
If you’re wondering how a card could fetch such a high price and how it could be so rare, no worries. We’ve got all the information you need, thanks to Bulbapedia.
The card (see above) is called Trainer No. 3.
It was first released in Japan as a Trainer card during several tournaments before ultimately ending up as the third place prize in the Pokémon World Championships.
It’s important to note that, although there appear to be many Trainer No. 3 cards, they’re all special reprints. This makes each version even rarer due to their limited numbers.
The buyer is offering $1,000 to anyone who knows anything about the card’s whereabouts.
